What’s New in Senior Research?

What’s New in Senior Research?
Top Research and Reports You Should Know

As the world’s population ages, science and public health are racing to understand how well we age. From national well being reports that track quality of life for older adults to cutting-edge studies on brain resilience and longevity, recent research is offering new insights that matter to seniors, families, caregivers, and communities alike.

National Health Trends: America’s Older Adults Today
A key resource for understanding the health and well-being of older Americans is the America’s Health Rankings® Senior Report.

The 2025 Senior Report provides a comprehensive overview of 55 measures of older adult health across all states, including early death rates, social engagement, clinician access, mental health, and more. It shows both positive trends—like increased volunteerism and more geriatric clinicians—and persistent challenges such as rising suicide and drug death rates, and growing poverty among seniors.

SuperAgers: Defying Cognitive Decline
One of the most exciting areas in aging research comes from long-term studies of SuperAgers—people in their 80s and beyond whose memory performance matches much younger adults.

Researchers at Northwestern University have spent years studying these individuals to identify the biological and lifestyle factors that help their brains stay sharp. Contrary to the old belief that cognitive decline is inevitable, SuperAgers often maintain thick brain cortices and strong memory function into advanced age.

A recent 2026 study revealed why SuperAgers maintain exceptional cognitive resilience: they generate significantly more new neurons in the hippocampus (a part of the brain key to memory) than typical older adults. These findings suggest aging brains may retain more capacity for growth and adaptation than previously thought.

Longevity Signals: What Centenarians’ Proteins Reveal
A recent breakthrough from researchers in Switzerland identified a set of “youth-associated proteins” in the blood of centenarians (people around 100 years old) that may help explain biological mechanisms behind slower aging. Compared with typical seniors and younger adults, these long-lived individuals showed protein profiles linked to lower inflammation, better metabolism, and stronger tissue resilience.
While the genetics of longevity are complex, this research suggests biomolecular signatures of aging could one day guide therapies or lifestyle strategies to help more people age healthfully.

Alzheimer’s and Early Detection Advances
Researchers are also making progress in predicting and understanding neurodegenerative diseases:
  • A promising blood test measuring the protein p-tau217 may be able to predict Alzheimer’s disease years before symptoms show. This could lead to earlier intervention strategies once refined and widely validated.
  • Another study shows aging slows the breakdown of synaptic proteins in the brain, potentially contributing to dementia. Tracking these changes may help scientists identify biomarkers that assess brain health across the aging process.

Big Picture Indicators: Well-Being Beyond Biology
Large national reports like Older Americans 2024: Key Indicators of Well-Being provide essential context on how societal factors affect aging. This federal report brings together data on health status, economics, behaviors, healthcare access, and more to illustrate the changing landscape of aging in the U.S.
These figures aren’t just statistics—they help communities understand where older adults are thriving and where gaps remain, such as in economic security, social support, or healthcare access.

What It All Means
Together, these studies and reports paint a rich picture of aging in the 21st century:
  • Health trends show progress and persistent challenges for older adults nationally.
  • Biological research reveals new possibilities for extending cognitive resilience and lifespan.
  • Early detection science is improving hope for tackling Alzheimer’s and other age-related diseases.

As research accelerates, the potential to transform aging into a period of vitality, purpose, and continued contribution grows stronger.

Thank you, Puget Sound Energy

When most people think of Puget Sound Energy, they think about keeping the lights on and the heat running. Here at Mt. Si Senior Center, we also think about the people behind those meters: older adults sharing lunch, neighbors gathering for hand and foot, exercise classes, support groups, and quiet conversations over coffee.

Puget Sound Energy is proud to support senior and community centers like Mt. Si Senior Center, and we’re deeply grateful to be one of the places they’ve chosen to invest in. Their partnership helps us offer what seniors need most: a safe place to belong, affordable meals, wellness programs, and trusted information about resources and support.

Senior centers carry a lot on their shoulders. We’re part social hub, part classroom, part safety net. Seniors are among the most vulnerable members of our community, and many are just one crisis away from losing stable housing. Rising costs for rent, food, and utilities can turn a tight budget into an emergency very quickly.

That’s why PSE’s support matters so much. Their commitment goes beyond energy service. By supporting organizations like Mt. Si Senior Center, they’re helping keep older adults warm, connected, and cared for. Their giving strengthens the same network of community services that helps seniors stay in their homes and in the Snoqualmie Valley they love.

Here at the center, PSE’s sponsorship shows up in simple, powerful ways: a welcoming building, heated gathering spaces in winter, and programs that run because partners like PSE choose to stand beside us and our seniors.

From all of us at Mt. Si Senior Center, thank you, Puget Sound Energy, for believing in seniors, investing in community, and helping make sure no one has to age alone.

Why Giving Tuesday and Year-End Gifts matters here at home?

11/23/2025

Giving Tuesday is a global day of generosity and the beginning of our Year-End Giving season, but for us it’s very local. Together, they help Mt. Si Senior Center step into a new year on solid ground, ready to say “yes” when a senior needs help.

Across the country, many older adults go days or even weeks without seeing a friend. Isolation is tied to higher risks of heart disease, depression, dementia, and early death. Here in the Snoqualmie Valley, we see the human side of those numbers every day. Mt. Si Senior Center exists to change that story.

Social services are expensive and community is priceless.  That’s where Mt. Si Senior Center comes in. When you give on Giving Tuesday or during the Year-End Giving season, you provide:
  • A hot, healthy lunch in a room where people know your name
  • Rides to medical appointments, grocery stores, and the center
  • Fitness classes, activities, and support groups that keep people moving and connected
  • Affordable senior housing and a safe place to belong

For many, this is the difference between being alone and being part of a community.

How your gift launches 2026This day of giving does more than help for one Tuesday. It powers the very start of 2026 and our busiest winter months. Your donation helps us:
  • Cover food and transportation costs when needs are highest
  • Keep doors open, lights on, and programs running during the darkest days of the year
  • Welcome new members in January who may be walking through our doors for the first time
  • Answer, “Yes, we can help,” when a neighbor calls and doesn’t know where else to turn

Those early bills are real: food, gas, utilities, staff, and program supplies. Your Giving Tuesday and Year-End Giving gifts go straight to work for real people in this community.

If this valley has shaped your life, or if someone you love has found connection here, this is a beautiful moment to give back. Your gift helps us begin 2026 strong and ensures local seniors know they are seen, valued, and surrounded by community.

Give today and keep Mt. Si seniors rooted in community. 🌲💚

Keeping the Valley Warm: Scott Leibowitz Gives Back

11/20/2025

If you live in the Snoqualmie Valley, there’s a good chance All Weather Heating & Air Conditioning has helped keep your home comfortable. Behind that work is owner Scott Leibowitz, whose commitment to honesty, integrity, and community care shows up far beyond the job site.

Scott often credits his grandparents, Jerry and Mildred Brieger, for shaping how he moves through the world. They taught him that honesty and integrity aren’t just nice ideas, but how you show up for people, especially your elders. Their example of looking out for older neighbors and family members is a big part of why supporting seniors in our community matters so deeply to him today. Partnering with Mt. Si Senior Center is one of the ways Scott honors the values they instilled in him.

What matters just as much to Scott is giving back to the community that his team lives and works in. All Weather invests in ongoing training for their staff and supports local organizations across the Valley, including The Trail Youth, Northwest Railway Museum, Mt. Si Festival, Mt. Si High School teams, Empower Youth, and more. Community isn’t a side project for Scott; it’s built into how he does business.

Mt. Si Senior Center is grateful to be part of that circle of care. Scott and All Weather are generous sponsors of our annual Santa Breakfast, helping make it possible for seniors, families, and kids to share a joyful morning together. His support sustains services that surround older adults with warmth and connection all year long: meals, programs, affordable housing, access to medical care, transportation, and a welcoming place to belong.

We are deeply thankful for Scott’s philanthropy and his belief that local businesses have a role in caring for their neighbors. Because of partners like All Weather, our seniors feel seen, valued, and supported right here at home.

Why Monthly Giving Changes Lives — Especially for Mt. Si Seniors

11/3/2025

At Mt. Si Senior Center, the difference between getting by and truly thriving often comes down to something simple: reliability. Our older Valley neighbors count on hot lunches, safe homes, meaningful conversations, and a trusted team they can turn to. Monthly donors make that possible—not in bursts, but in quiet, ongoing ways that shape the everyday experience of aging with dignity.

Every afternoon, you’ll find Jim walking through the doors, rain or shine. He comes for lunch, but also for laughter, purpose, and the kind of connection that feels like lifelong friendship. Because of our wraparound services, Jim doesn't need to drive across the valley for help. Rather, he can access meals, community programs, medical resources, and a caring community all in one place. That consistency keeps him not just nourished, but mobile, independent, and engaged.

This time of year brings celebration and generosity, but for many, it also highlights absence or uncertainty. While holiday drives meet immediate needs, monthly giving builds what comes next. It powers stability in an unpredictable world. Choosing to give regularly reflects something deeper—a belief in community care and the quiet strength of organic giving. If that speaks to you, join us. Help keep the lights on, the meals warm, and the walkways open for neighbors like Jim—one month at a time.

Holiday Greenery Sale: Rooted in Community, Growing Together
The holidays are a time of light, tradition, and generosity. At Mt. Si Senior Center, even the smallest gifts—like purchasing a wreath, garland, or poinsettia—add up to something much greater. When neighbors across the Valley give together, we create a season that’s not only beautiful but also deeply meaningful.

Why your purchase matters
Last year, this fundraiser helped us serve 1,500 hot lunches and provided dozens of rides to medical appointments and grocery trips for seniors who can no longer drive. Your purchase means more meals shared at the table, more access to essential medical care, and more moments of connection that fight isolation.

One member said: “I never realized how much I needed this community until I found it. Now, the lunches, activities, support, and friends are a part of my everyday life.”

Beauty with purpose
Each wreath, swag, and garland is fresh, locally grown, and handcrafted by Windmill Gardens, who have partnered with us for over 40 years. When you bring one home, you’re not just decorating—you’re helping to supported neighbors and friends with dignity and care.

Rooted in Community
Like the evergreens in our wreaths, Mt. Si Senior Center is rooted in community. Our strength doesn’t come from one large act of generosity—it grows from many small ones over time. Every wreath or poinsettia purchased, every monthly pledge, every neighbor who shows up becomes part of something lasting.

Through our Evergreen Circle monthly giving program, even modest gifts—$10, $25, or whatever feels right, creating steady support senior care depend on. These gifts, paired with community fundraisers like the greenery sale, are what keep our community connected to friends, daily routines, and meaningful activities.

Combined, these small steps make something much greater: independence, health, and joy. That’s what it means to be rooted in community—many people coming together to grow something strong, supportive, and full of life

Order today, deck your halls, and know you’re helping seniors thrive.

Thank you! Your purchase this holiday season is more than greenery—it’s generosity that grows.

Celebrating Senior Center Month

9/12/2025

September: Celebrating Senior Center Month — Why Giving to MSSC Matters More Than Ever

For many older adults, a senior center is more than a building. It’s the place where they share a hot meal, take a class that keeps them active, and find a friend who listens. This is the heart of Senior Center Month each September: honoring the rich value senior centers bring to communities everywhere.

Senior centers have shaped lives for more than 80 years, beginning with the first formal center in 1943. Today, more than 11,000 centers nationwide serve over 1 million older adults every day with meals, wellness programs, and social connection. Here in the Snoqualmie Valley, nearly 1 in 4 residents is over 60, and hundreds of seniors come through Mt. Si Senior Center’s doors each month for all of our programs and services.

But the need is outpacing resources. Rising costs and uncertain funding mean MSSC must look to the community for stable support. That’s why we’re leading the charge with the Evergreen Circle, our monthly giving program. Recurring gifts —whether $1, $25, $50, or $500— provide the steady foundation we need to keep our doors open, our lights on, and our programs thriving.

Senior Center Month is a celebration, but it’s also a call to action. Seniors can’t wait. They need us now more than ever. This September, the best way to honor Senior Center Month is by joining the Evergreen Circle—your monthly gift ensures the work we celebrate today continues long into the future.

Join the Evergreen Circle Today

Will you take your place in the Evergreen Circle and make sure every Valley senior has a place to belong—not just today, but for years to come?
