Chili Cook‑Off
Individuals, teams, and community groups are invited. Bragging rights and the Chili G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) title are on the line.

Chili Cook‑Off — Contestant Rules
Eligibility & Entry

• Open to ages 16+ (youth teams may enter with an adult lead).
• Registration deadline: Friday, September 12 (or when slots fill).
• No entry fee. We ask each team to bring 2–3 gallons of chili.

What to Bring

• Your chili hot and ready to serve in crockpots or chafing dishes (electric preferred).
• Extension cord (25–50 ft) and power strip (limited outlets available).
• Ladle, serving gloves, and a food thermometer.
• A simple ingredient list and allergen labels (e.g., dairy, nuts, gluten).
• Optional: simple table décor/sign with team

We Provide

• 6‑ft table space, sample cups, spoons, napkins, ballots, water station, trash/recycling.

Food Safety

• Keep hot foods at 140°F / 60°C or above; reheat to 165°F if needed.
• No raw/undercooked meats; avoid home‑canned ingredients.
• Hand hygiene/gloves while serving; hair tied back.

Serving & Voting

• Sample size: ~2 oz cups.
• Public votes for People’s Choice by ballot

Shine up your classics, customs, hot rods, and special interest vehicles. Limited display parking; first‑come, first‑park after roll‑in opens.

• All years of vintage & classic welcome; special‑interest and hot rods encouraged.

Donations

• Chili Judges and Tasters: $5 Taste Pass for unlimited chili samples (while supplies last).
• Car Show Entrants & Chili Teams: Free to enter; donations appreciated.
• All proceeds benefit Mt. Si Senior Center’s meals, transportation, wellness, affordable housing, and social connection programs.

​How Advancements in Senior Health Are Helping Older Adults Thrive

The way we think about aging is undergoing a radical transformation. No longer viewed as a slow decline, aging is increasingly a time of growth, opportunity, and vibrant living—thanks to meaningful advances in healthcare, technology, and community support.

At Mt. Si Senior Center, this shift is in real time. Our members are not only living longer, but they’re also living better, and the data supports these trends.

What’s Changing in Senior Health?
1. Telehealth & Remote Care Access
    The rise of telemedicine has broken down barriers for seniors, especially in rural areas.

• In 2021, 43.3% of adults aged 65+ used telehealth, well above the 29.4% of younger adults (CDC).
• Remote patient monitoring (RPM) tools will double in use by 2025. These tools allow seniors to track vital signs and receive early intervention care without leaving home.

2. Fall Prevention Technologies
    Falls are still the leading cause of injury for seniors, but prevention tools are advancing:

• Nearly 1 in 3 adults over 65 experiences a fall annually; over half of those over 80 fall at least once per year.
• Today’s wearable sensors and fall-detection systems reach up to 99% accuracy, helping connect seniors to emergency care faster.
• Programs like the CDC's STEADI initiative and balance-focused VR therapies are reducing fall-related ER visits across the U.S.

3. Social Connection as a Health Priority
    We now know that loneliness can be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

• Harvard’s 85-year Study of Adult Development continues to show that strong social relationships are the top predictor of happiness and longevity.
• Community centers, walking clubs, and "social prescribing" programs (where doctors refer patients to community activities) are vital health interventions.
• With 84.8% of senior households online, virtual engagement tools also close isolation gaps.

4. Broader Access to Care and Inclusion

• Geriatric care access has improved, with a 4% increase in geriatric specialists between 2022 and 2023.
• More seniors are connected to care through tech, thanks to expanded broadband access and growing familiarity with digital tools.

Bringing Wellness to You: Free Medical Services for Adults 55+

​Mt. Si Senior Center believes access to quality healthcare should be simple, convenient, and available to everyone—especially our older adults. That’s why we’re proud to offer Senior Mobile Medical Outreach, a free wellness clinic available not only at our center, but also at SnoRidge and Cascade Park Apartments.

In partnership with trusted local medical providers, registered nurses and certified nursing assistants visit several times a month to offer health and wellness screenings, wound and foot care, support for chronic conditions, and more. 

A dedicated caseworker is also available to help connect seniors with additional services and resources to support their overall well-being. 

You do not need to be a member to take part--these services are free for anyone aged 55 and older across King County.  Join MSSC to bring vitally needed care to those who may otherwise go without.
